Wind lift
Strong gusts get under slates and tiles, lifting them out of position or snapping them.
A single slipped slate is enough to let rain into a roof. We replace slipped, cracked and missing slates and tiles, match them to the existing roof as closely as possible, and check the surrounding area so the repair holds.
Slates and tiles fail for different reasons, and the cause shapes both the repair and how a claim is treated.
Strong gusts get under slates and tiles, lifting them out of position or snapping them.
Slates are held by nails, and once those corrode a slate can slip down the roof even on a calm day.
Falling branches, debris or a dislodged chimney pot can crack slates across a section of roof.
Any gap in the roof covering lets rain onto the timbers and into the ceilings below.
Wind can also loosen the ridge and verge coverings that protect the top and edges of the roof.
Isolated slipped or broken slates are replaced individually, secured and checked against the slates around them. Where wind has stripped a larger section, or fixings have failed across an area, a wider repair is more reliable than replacing slates one at a time. We also check the roof around the damage, so other loose or cracked slates are picked up at the same visit.
Slate roofs are common across Edinburgh and the Lothians, from tenements to bungalows. Replacement slates are chosen to match the size, colour and thickness of the existing roof as closely as possible, so the repair doesn't stand out.
Many policies cover sudden storm damage but not wear and tear, such as nails that have rusted through over time. Report storm damage promptly, photograph what you can see from the ground and never go onto the roof yourself.
We set out the roof repair in an itemised quote for consideration by your insurer. When a storm is the cause, our storm damage and roof repairs page covers the wider process, including any water damage inside.
Report the damage to your insurer, then request a survey. We'll inspect the roof and prepare an itemised repair quote for your insurer to consider.
